Zure ontvangst van Indiana Jones in Cannes

Zaterdagavond werd dé te verwachten blockbuster van 2008 voor het eerst vertoond aan de pers in Cannes: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Vanaf zondag druppelden langzaam de eerste recensies binnen van de filmrecensenten die kaartjes wisten te bemachtigen. En dat is op een festival als dat van Cannes moeilijker dan je zou denken, en het lukte bijvoorbeeld Jan Pieter Ekker en Bor Beekman van Cinema.nl niet eens om binnen te komen. Dat hun laatste weblog alweer van afgelopen vrijdag dateert is overigens nog kwalijker, want zo worden we niet veel wijzer van hun aanwezigheid op het belangrijkste filmfestival van Europa.

Dan maar zelf wat grasduinen op het net op zoek naar de meningen over deze nieuwste film van Steven Spielberg, precies 19 jaar na het derde deel van de Indiana Jones serie.

James Rocchi van Cinematical is veruit het meest negatief:

"Loaded with moments referencing the earlier films and full of action sequences that don't measure up to past highlights of the series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull feels simultaneously self-conscious and self-satisfied, as if a little warm glow of past glory will soothe our bumps and blows from the clumsiness of the script. David Koepp wrote the screenplay from a story by Jeff Nathanson and George Lucas, and if Koepp's contributed lines and jokes fall flat, they're just small tarnished bits of brass on a ship that goes drastically off-course with Lucas at the helm."

Maar ook Joe Utichi van Rotten Tomatoes windt er geen doekjes om: "After more than a year of hoping and praying that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull would do right by fans of the archaeological franchise, the film's first screening in Cannes confirms the worst. There's a brilliant Indy film buried somewhere within, but Star Wars syndrome has stuck and Steven Spielberg and George Lucas just couldn't resist dipping into their box of computer-generated magic."

Todd McCarthy van het invloedrijke en sterk Amerikaans georiënteerde Variety is als enige -niet verwonderlijk- juist erg positief en schrijft dat "David Koepp's script accomplishes the two essentials: It keeps the structure on the straight and narrow, and is true to the character of Indiana Jones himself. Thanks to this and Ford's full-bodied performance, Indy comes through just as viewers remember him: crafty, capable, impatient, manly and red-blooded American."

Om af te sluiten dan nog maar een negatieve recensie in Telegraph.uk van David Gritten: "Curiously, Spielberg has said he wanted the film to have an old-fashioned feel, with fewer computer-generated scenes, and longer shots than today's fast-cut, breathless action-adventures. Well, The Crystal Skull is certainly old-fashioned, though not necessarily in a good way. And many of its striking scenes - notably a climax that briefly recalls Close Encounters of the Third Kind - could only be computer-generated. With a cast clearly pre-fabricated to appeal to all ages, an overstuffed plot and an ageing action hero, it feels born of commercial calculation rather than a story that needed to be told."

Aan de kassa zullen al deze zure reacties weinig uitmaken, en vanaf aankomende donderdag kan iedereen zelf zijn mening gaan vormen, want op 22 mei gaat Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wereldwijd in première.
